Acting Well
Published in Paperback by Circles International (01 August, 2001)
Authors: Marshall Yaeger, Roy Scheider, and William Rodman Shankle
Average review score:

A weight program that works!
I had done scores of diets, exercise programs, etc., and never kept the weight off. I had put on 20 extra pounds in the early 1990s, and simply couldn't get it off--not to mention that I have always struggled, dieted, procrastinated, etc., about my being overweight.

In February, 2000, I went on Acting Well. The key is using the log, doing the brief mental preparation in the morning, and understanding--just a little bit--how a properly trained actor creates a new role. It's all in the book, and it's all very simple.

Two years later? I took off around 25 pounds in the first year, going from 172 down to 145-150. I have settled in at 149 (I thoroughly enjoy weighing myself every day!), and sometimes drop a bit lower. It's important that I lost slowly, and even more important that I have NO trouble keeping it off. Now I am a thin person, and I enjoy the habits of a thin person. I know this will last for the rest of my life.

My only disappointment is that I didn't do it (it wasn't available, unfortunately) sooner.

I love my new me, which is really the me I always wanted to be. I never thought I'd make it though. Amazing!

And, incidentally, the book is a fun read; very well written. It debunks lots of stuff, medical and otherwise, and makes it clear that the problem is psychological, not physical. Calorie counting, excess exercising, dieting--they all don't work for more than a short time. This is a sensible, doable program; not a program, in fact, a life! After all, Shakespeare said that we're all only actors on a stage. With this plan, we can be good actors!

Adorno
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1984)
Author: Martin Jay
Average review score:

highly readable, was the first committed to the Adorno fix
Martin Jay was one of the very first scholars to embrace the Frankfurt School, and held a longterm committment to it running up through the present. Adorno has only within the last ten years become a dare I say fashionable focus for many scholars from many perspectives and disciplines and frightfully I dare say there are unthinkable categories still remaining for scholars to pursue with this recluse apolitical Mandarin-like thinker.

Jay's modest book touches on the primary categories, the Negative Dialectics, dealing within the Hegelian edifice,if in fact philosophy is still thinkable, that it in fact still remains because it has yet to be realized.

Adorno's thinking on music was in fact very unique with a full scope of other disciplines brought into the welter of analysis. It was never done,at least not with the level of vigour Adorno had brought to the endeavor of thinking of music from a context of the social and political. This is a chasm still not closed. Adorno musically had emphasized the cultural importance with a placement on the dodecaphonic means, the 12 Tone school of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, all of which Adorno had known during his lifetime. He had studied composition with Alban Berg.Jay metaphorically connects this to Adorno's "atonal" way of thinking of philosophy.

There is not much on "Aesthetic Theory",largely it was only available in German at the time of Jay's highly readable book.

Published in Hardcover by Allyn & Bacon (June, 1967)
Authors: Milton H. Erickson and Jay Haley
Average review score:

The essential text for anyone interestedin clinical hypnosis
This text is a must read for any person seriously interested in hypnosis. If you do not already know the story of Milton Erickson, check the Erickson Foundation web site to learn more. He was the person primarily responsible for the research which recognized hypnosis as the effective therepeutic modality it is. The collated works in this volume span many years, much of it predates 1959, the year the American Medical Association accepted hypnosis as a legitimate practice. Many of the papers are the origin of the common tales and metaphors used by hypnotists/NLP trainers. This text is clinical in nature, so one must have some background in in one of the follwing: psychiatry/ medicine/ therapy/hypnosis/NLP. If you want to understand the processes which enable hypnosis to change people......buy this book.

Superlative New Edition
This new edition of Agribusiness Management provides great, current examples that directly apply to food and agribusiness situations and people. The discussion questions and case studies are thorough and thought provoking for the student or for the professional who wants to improve understanding of the industry.

Agribusiness Management has great examples, discussion questions and case studies. This new edition is broken into six parts: Part I looks at the scope, functions and tasks of agribusiness management with current numbers and examples. Part II addresses business organization and international agriculture. Part III involves a detailed discussion on marketing management - a section that could greatly benefit countless professionals. Part IV is financial management for agribusiness. Part V examines operations and logistics. Part VI is human resource management for agribusiness.

The authors provide a fresh look at the food and agribusiness industries as they are today with solid fundamentals for the professional facing these challenges in the future. Even in the preface, the authors point out that this book was written for students, for managers and for instructors. It is obvious they had these goals in mind when developing the text.

Despite the stoic looking cover, Agribusiness Management is fresh, current and inspiring. I have read it from cover to cover and regularly use it or refer to it in my work.

Aiming High: Success Stories of Leadership and Strategic Planning
Published in Paperback by Authority Press Inc. (01 May, 2001)
Author: Jay W. Spechler
Average review score:

Highly Recommended!
If you believe that successful leadership can't be codified, Colonel Jay W. Spechler, Ph.D., would beg to differ. A management consultant and professor, the Colonel clearly describes the traits of a successful leader and then details what such a leader must do to guide a strategic planning initiative. Having pinned his model for success to a board like a butterfly, he describes how 18 organizations changed through strategic planning under strong leaders. The Colonel's organizations vary from large corporations - American Airlines, AT&T and Ritz Carlton Hotels - to nonprofit, trade and governmental organizations - a local school board, the United Services Automobile Association and the U.S. Air Force. He nails down and organizes the major elements that make a strategic initiative work. We [...] recommend this book as a refreshing change from the general run of works on theoretical strategic planning. Thanks to his focus on the human and organizational face of leadership and change, Spechler is our new favorite Colonel.

Alcatraz, the Prison
Published in Paperback by Sunbelt Pubns (July, 1999)
Authors: Jay Stuller and Golden Gate National Park Association
Average review score:

An Informative And Entertaining Look At Alcatraz Prison
I picked this book up at the gift shop on Alcatraz Island. This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn about how the Federal Prison on Alcatraz operated.

The book contains a very thorough essay by Jay Stuller in which he describes the history of the prison, many of the famous inmates that were housed there, and many famous incidents involving riots, muders, suicides, and escape attempts. You'll learn all about inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and "The Birdman" Robert Stroud. While the essay is quite informative, this book's real strength is in all the pictures that it contains. Ever page has black and white pictures depicting prison life on Alcatraz. By looking at these pictures you'll get a very good idea about the prison cells, watch towers, officers' living quarters, and the kinds of activities the prisoners engaged in to pass the time.

This is an excellent reference book for information about Alcatraz. It contains just about all the information that you would get if you actually took a tour of the prison (which I've done several times). It's also a fun and interesting book to read.

All Wheel Drive High Performance Handbook
Published in Paperback by Motorbooks International (August, 1990)
Author: Jay William Lamm
Average review score:

A good purchase for beginners through to enthusiasts
This is a great book that explains how to get the most from your All Wheel Drive (as opposed to 4wd)vehicle. It is not just for racing enthusiasts as it also includes information on how to best set up your car for road use in general. Although somewhat dated, it is well worth reading for anyone from a beginner through to an All Wheel Drive enthusiast or anyone interested in rally and motorsport in general. My advise would be to buy this book, then push the publishers to put it back into print with revisions.

Alma
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (April, 2002)
Author: Jay Higginbotham
Average review score:

A beautiful tribute to all women everywhere
Jay Higginbotham, author of "Fast Train Russia," is a prolific writer of some 15 books. (Both fiction and non-fiction) Many of his books have international appeal, and have been translated into numerous foreign languages.
He is considered a leading expert on early French history; most notably, along the Gulf Coast of the United States. (Old Mobile: Fort Louis De LA Louisiane, 1702-1711 (Library of Alabama Classics)
In his latest book, Alma, Higginbotham shows extraordinary empathy for the every day struggles of women. He deftly escorts the reader deep inside the psychic of an ordinary woman, Alma, who comes to terms with her destiny, and, in the process, gains global recognition for her anti war sentiments, and for her stance against male dominated decision makers. It is the story of the evolution of a passionate human spirit, and a tribute to all women everywhere.
In my opinion, this is Higginbotham's best work to date. I highly recommend it.
